food not bombs has been established in sarasota since april 1998 when a joint theatre of the oppressed-food not bombs picnic occurred. regular meals began in may, and although we are sometimes late to our sharings, we have only missed two - one due to hurricane georges. we left our original location of five points park in downtown sarasota due to police pressure and we now hide out in a nearby neighborhood park called Gillespie. although this park is a nicer park (at least i think so-lots of trees and space for running around) it is not a highly visible location. the attendance at our meals is sporadic, sometimes thirty or so people come to eat and then the next week only five to ten will come. we receive regular donations of vegetables from a produce store; produce, groceries, and vegetarian and vegan leftovers from a local health food store/deli; groceries from a health food store; fresh greens from an organic farm; and sometimes bagels. other donations have come to us from a "Mayor's Feed the Hungry" campaign, New College students, and friendly dumpsters (examples). we cook every saturday at 11:30 am and share food at 2 pm in the park. and we now have meetings (sometimes).
Recent:
plans are being made for a distribution network (fnb2) for our surplus
raw and cooked food. also, we are continuing work on a sarasota infocenter
(atari infoshop) that we opened july 1, 1999. the center will eventually
serve as our fnb cooking location and will also host an open community
kitchen. yay!
